Becca Schepps joins JVS Women’s Team

by herb on Feb.09, 2010, under chronicle

Becca Schepps found her way to cycling after a terrible summer internship and 40 days of straight rain. Sitting at  home in Princeton, NJ during the summer of 2003 she prayed for sunshine, watched the Tour De France and thought, “I could do that.”  And well, she couldn’t, but she did buy a bike, and in the fall, headed back to the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a plan: Quit the  UW Varsity Lightweight Rowing team and join the UW Road Cycling Team.

From there she raced Collegiate A’s, made her way to Collegiate Nationals, graduated, raced locally in Wisconsin and then in NJ with the Somerset Wheelmen, moved to Atlanta, began mountain biking, moved to San Francisco, raced with a group of rowdy boys as their ‘quota female’ for 12 and 24 hour races, and eventually crisscrossed the country one more time, landing in her current location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

Becca commutes, rain or shine, every day on her 49t:18-fixed-gear hipster-mobile, to work as a copywriter at Saatchi & Saatchi.  In addition to cycling she rock-climbs, thinks about running and crushes workouts at Crossfit Brooklyn.

Frank Vandenbroucke 1974-2009

by herb on Nov.23, 2009, under chronicle, news, racing

When he exploded on the pro scene in 1994, Frank Vandenbroucke was hailed as the new Eddy Merckx, but…

His finest hour. Victory in the 1999 Liege-Bastogne-Liege after climbing the steepest hills the Ardennes had to offer in the BIG chainring. It was a jaw-dropping performance!

Bernard Kohl: Retires from cycling

by herb on May.28, 2009, under news

Austria’s Bernhard Kohl, recently given a 2 year ban for testing  positive for the EPO (Erythropoietin) blood booster “CERA” during the 2008 Tour de France, has claimed in a non-shocking statement that “probably half the peloton is on “CERA“. Kohl was hoping for a reduced sentence, provided he named his suppliers of the illegal substance, but refused to be drawn into giving full details. He was therefore given the full 2 year ban. He announced his retirement from cycling this week although he now faces an investigation for sporting fraud by prosecutors in Austria.

“I have always known it, at the very top level, there has always been a war of science, chemistry and wisdom raging between the doctors involved. It is impossible to race at those average speeds day in and day out on only rice and beans and mineral water.”

Dear Herb,

That’s so kind and thoughtful to post Colin’s results on your website (which looks great by the way). I appreciate, as always, your warm-hearted, caring efforts to guide both Colin and me along the best path in the world of cycling.
Will you be at Somerville?
warmly,
Mick
